Investment casting, also known as lost-wax casting, produces complex metal parts with exceptional surface finish and dimensional accuracy.
The Investment Casting Process
- Pattern Creation - A wax pattern is injected into a precision metal die.
- Assembly - Multiple patterns are attached to a central sprue system.
- Ceramic Shell Building - The cluster is dipped in ceramic slurry. After 6-12 layers, a 5-10mm shell is formed.
- Casting - Molten metal is poured into the preheated ceramic shell.
- Finishing - The ceramic shell is removed, and castings are separated and finished.
Applications
Aerospace (turbine blades), medical (surgical instruments), industrial (valve bodies), and automotive (turbocharger components).
Investment Casting vs Other Processes
For tighter tolerances, CNC machining may be preferred. For high-volume simpler parts, powder metallurgy offers cost advantages.
