High-Precision Surgical Scalpel Blades via CNC & MIM
Client: European Surgical Instrument Manufacturer —Tuttlingen, Germany ←2025
The Challenge
A renowned German surgical instrument manufacturer required surgical scalpel handles and disposable blade interfaces with micron-level precision. The handle needed an ergonomic textured grip, precise blade locking mechanism, and compatibility with standard surgical blades. The stainless steel 420 components required hardness of HRC 52-54 for the cutting interface and a satin finish for the handle body. Previous suppliers struggled with consistent quality across production batches.
Our Solution
We utilized a hybrid approach: 5-axis CNC machining for the scalpel handles from 420 stainless steel bar stock, followed by precision heat treatment and cryogenic processing for optimal hardness and dimensional stability. The blade interface was machined to ±0.005mm tolerance using our Mikron HSM 600U 5-axis machining centers. A custom fixture system was designed to ensure consistent alignment during the multi-step machining process.
Results
±0.005mm repeatability on blade interface, HRC 53 consistent hardness across all batches, 15,000 units/month production capacity, zero defects in 12-month production run, ISO 13485 compliant process certification.
